Front Room Christmas 2025 – Set Designer Job Description

Front Room has a position for a set designer to work on their in-house evening Christmas show 2025. This role is to design & build a bespoke set for the show (rehearsals period 24th November to the 11th December daytimes) opening on Friday 12th December. All set must be delivered as early as possible in the week commencing 8th December for this to be used in rehearsals ahead of opening. 

The role will include design, sourcing materials, building set, attending key rehearsals, & attending meetings ahead of the rehearsal period to discuss initial design plans (in September/October). The designer will collaborate closely with the director to create an atmospheric, budget-conscious production, aiming for sustainable & reusable options where possible. We are looking for a creative, resourceful individual with understanding of fringe or immersive theatre. This role is probably suited to an early career designer. 

In previous years, the sets for our shows have involved transforming the whole space (Front Room WsM) to create an immersive setting for the production using fabrics and key set pieces. This style can be less prescriptive and more imaginative to create a space that’s vague yet familiar. 

Ideally, the right candidate will be able to support with the costume design on the production as well.

Person specification:

• Experience with/understanding of set and costume design & builds for live performance
• Budget-conscious creativity and resourcefulness
• Ability to work flexibly and independently
• Strong communication and collaboration skills

Fee

• £1500 total fee for this work.
• There is a £800 budget for set materials which the designer would be responsible for managing.
• There is an additional £500 budget for costume.
• This is a freelance position, you will be responsible for your own tax and NI contributions.
